Soldering
The soldering required for these projects is very easy, as the connections are all relatively large. If you don't know how to solder here's a quick primer.
- Heat up the iron and tin the tip with a little solder.
- Tin the wire you will be working with by heating the bared end and melting some solder onto it.
- If you are soldering to another soldered connection, put the tinned tip of the wire on the other solder joint and briefly press the tip of the iron to it. The solder on the wire and the target joint should melt in a fraction of a second. Remove the iron and the wire should be stuck in place.
- If you are soldering to something that is not already covered with solder, you will have to tin it. Put the tip of the iron on the target and melt a little solder onto it. When you are ready to solder to the target, do it as in step 3.This is how you solder wires to the copper pads on the PCB.

Tips
Practice soldering some junk bits of wire together. If you have an old printed-circuit board, try soldering some wires onto the solder exposed on the board. Most importantly, don't go overboard on the solder. The pieces should be lightly covered only. Big globs could run and drip onto things that they shouldn't. Also make absolutely sure you are using rosin-core solder intended for electronics. Acid-core solder is right out.
