Why Not to Use a Sony Controller in your "Frankenstick" The PCB in the Sony pad is very hard to work with. At first glance, it looks like it should work fine, but the black traces (indicated with the red arrow) are made out of some strange material that solder won't stick to. The only places you can make connections to are the tiny bits of exposed solder on the pins of components, or the little copper pads that sit off to the side of some traces (see the green arrows).
The Mad Katz/High Frequency controllers are very different. They have a lot of exposed copper (green arrows), which is easy to solder to. They also include the slow, turbo, and auto switches (and LEDs) which you may want to include in your stick project. Any gamepad that has copper exposed can be used to build a joystick with, as long as you can figure out where to make your connections too.
