Here are instructions for how to update your FreeBSD system to understand the new daylight savings time changes. These instructions will even work with good old 4.x.

LogiGamer mouse profile software lets you assign keystrokes (or any other command) to all of your Logitech mouse buttons. Why Logitech doesn't let you do that in their own control panel, who knows... The program has two parts: a profile editor, and a lightweight profile switcher that can detect what's running and load the right profile for it. Be aware that the most current info seems to be in the forum, including the link to the very newest version. Read the first post in that thread, there are a few manual installation steps.
Tip: in Logitech SetPoint, go to the gaming tab, turn on Game Detection, and make sure that "keep keypress button assignments" is turned on. Otherwise, keystrokes assigned to mouse buttons don't seem to work.

If you aren't using some kind of ad-filtering software, you are either a) a masochist, b) lazy, c) deeply concerned about a "social contract" that you think exists between yourself and the sites you visit, d) a chump clicking on a monkey, or e) frustrated and wishing there was a better way to do things.
I used to use Proxomitron at home to filter web crap on my Windows machine. Then I switched to Privoxy, which does basically the same thing, except I run it on a FreeBSD server where it cleanses the web for all the other machines on the LAN. That said--I just started a new job, so I installed Proxomitron on the WinXP machine they gave me. Here we get to real point of this post: there seems to be an active Proxomitron user community at CastleCops.com, and user Grypen maintains a nice filter set. (There are others too, but Grypen's seems to have the most recent updates.)
Hit the filter set announcement page and download Proxomitron and the filter set.
Install Proxomitron, then quit it.
Install the filter set.
Restart Proxomitron.
In IE, go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Lan Settings. Change your proxy to localhost port 8080
Once you have made this change, IE will not load pages unless Proxomitron is running. Remember that!
Enjoy the web without all the crap
Sad side note: while digging up this stuff I learned that the author of Proxomitron died in 2004.

DonationCoder.com has a fairly recent review covering many free and unfree text editors. UltraEdit ($40, 30 day trial) wins top honors (and it is what I will use at work). They mention the free PSPad as being very good aside from terrible word-wrapping. I tried PSPad and would agree, but the latest beta seems to have fixed word-wrap. (By the way, if you have a problem with some keys not working in PSPad, go to Settings/Program Settings/Key Map and hit the Default button.)

Me and Google just had to figure this out so I thought I would share.
Lately, when I started up my WinXP SP2 machine, some of my system tray icons would not appear—Grisoft AVG Free, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, Daemon Tools, and other such programs were afflicted. Basically, any program that put an icon in the tray might start up, but fail to display its icon, leaving me no way to interact with the application.

I have to use Outlook at work. The free
Lookout plugin
adds much better mail searching, making it easy to find old messages. It's free,
it's stable, and it works, so try it already.
It must be
good, Microsoft bought the company. Right? Guys? Hello?

"When you activate Windows XP, Microsoft stores the data in the Windows
Product Activation database files wpa.dbl and Wpa.bak in the folder %systemroot%system32.
If you change the motherboard or make significant hardware changes, XP will
require you to reactive. But if you plan to reinstall XP on the same hardware,
you can back up the activation status and then restore it after you reinstall
and avoid the activation process."

Recently I was introduced to PDAHay.com where I found a lot of new PocketPC freeware. Here are a couple of the better titles I tried out.
WolfClock is a freeware clock with alarms. It has lots of fun appearance customization options and can play MP3, WAV, OGG and MOD files as alarms. I currently find the alarm settings kind of awkward but the rest of the package is very nice. The app is still under development, and I will definitely be keeping an eye on it.
EvilDice PE is a PocketPC version of a very cool though little known Playstation puzzle game, Devil Dice.

Like we all know that water flows downhill, we know that Real Networks' media player sucks. Penny Arcade approached this topic today in their typical light, inoffensive fashion. Thanks to them I learned about a cool lightweight and free alternative to the hellspawn that is RealOne: Real Alternative. (scroll down to find the solo download)
"The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
